“Women in Print,”part of the  Brenda Knowles ‘Inside Journalism Series.’ The panel is made up of distinguished guest journalists Diane Egner ,Publisher & Managing Editor of 83 Degrees Media ; Lois Kindle, Freelance Writer for the Observer;  Colleen Kochannek , Founder & Publisher Townie Life Magazine ; and  Alexandra Zayas ,Tampa Bay Times Enterprise Editor. Q & A will follow the panel discussion.

Diane Egner, Publisher & Managing Editor of 83DegreesMedia.com is an award-winning journalist with more than three decades of experience writing about the Tampa Bay region. She is a member of USF Women in Leadership & Philanthropy (WLP) and serves on numerous boards including the Institute for Research in Art at USF. A graduate of the University of Minnesota with a BA in journalism, she won the top statewide award for editorial writing from the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors while at The Tampa Tribune and received recognition by the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists for creative work at WUSF Public Broadcasting.

Lois Kindle has been in the newspaper business for 40 years. She started as a newspaper carrier and worked her way up through the circulation department to senior management. After 20 years, she switched to a new side of the business by starting her own freelance business. In 2003, she became a full-time reporter and photographer for the Tampa Tribune, which folded in May, 2016. She now works part-time as a Freelance Writer for the Observer News publications in Southern Hillsborough County. Lois’ first and foremost love in journalism is community news.

Colleen Kochannek is the Founder and Publisher of TownieLifeMagazine.com, an online magazine. Early in her career Colleen was a freelance writer for national publications such as Better Homes and Gardens, Woman’s Day and various publications with 100+ feature length articles to her credit. Colleen went on to a career in educational publishing. She launched TownieLifeMagazine.com in May 2016 to shine a spotlight on South Shore Hillsborough County. Colleen has a Master’s Degree in International Business Administration from St. Louis University and a Master’s Degree in Applied Linguistics from University of Massachusetts,Boston. While she never formally studied writing or journalism, writing has been an integral part of her personal and work life.

Alexandra Zayas supervises a team of award-winning writers, edits the monthly Floridian magazine and works with reporters across the newsroom on some of the Tampa Bay Times’ most ambitious stories. As an investigative reporter, she won the 2013 Selden Ring Award for Investigative Reporting, the Livingston Award for Young Journalists and a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism and was a finalist in the Pulitzer Prize for her three-part series “In God’s Name”.   Zayas graduated from the University of Miami. She joined the Times in 2005. She serves on the National Advisory Board of the Poynter Institute

 

The FCC Brenda Knowles ‘Inside Journalism Series’

This series includes panel discussions focused on all forms of journalism, from print, broadcast, and photo-journalism to on-line media, followed by an Audience Q & A .The Brenda Knowles ‘Inside Journalism’ Series has been established to honor the impact Knowles made as the Publisher and Editor of South Hillsborough County’s award-winning community newspaper, The Observer.  Brenda worked for The Observer from 1988 until her death in January, 2014. She enjoyed her work immensely and had a never-ending passion for creating a newspaper that was relevant to the community and a “relentless focus on sharing good news.” On her editorial side, Brenda was dedicated to the proper use of the English language.
