Knock ’em dead with a “tight five”! Create material you can be proud of, and be ready for the stage. This class focuses on the generation, development, and performance of the material you create. No experience needed. These remote classes will meet 2 hours a week for 6 weeks, followed by a final in-person class and showcase outside of class where you can invite others to see you shine.

Stand – Up 101:
In this class, we explore:
• Basic joke structure.
• A variety of tools to develop a comedic piece to full potential.
• Building in tags after a joke for additional joke pay offs.
• Finding the relatability in our shared experiences.
• Developing your comedic point of view
• Building stage presence.
• Generating a “tight five” minutes
• Crafting a set and polishing it for bookings
• Managing hecklers
• The do’s & don’ts of getting booked.
All TMA@Firehouse events take place at the Firehouse Cultural Center located at 101 1st Ave NE in Ruskin.

Instructor: This course will be led by renowned standup comedian, improv expert, performance artist, and MC, Tamale Sepp. Tamale tours internationally, performing as a stand-up comedian and interdisciplinary performer. She is also a regular teaching artist at some of the most notable improv schools in the US.

About Tamale: Voted one of Chicago’s Best Stand Up Comedians for The Reader, Tamale is a regular at The Laugh Factory, Zanies Comedy Clubs, and countless showcases. She’s been featured in national Comedy festivals, including Gilda’s Laughfest, Chicago Women’s Funny Festival, Chicago Improv Festival, Sketchfest and more. She graduated from notable improv schools the Second City Conservatory Program, I.O. Chicago, and Annoyance Theaters. Tamale was trained in long form, short form, and experimental forms of improv by Chicago’s best improvisers. As a part of the Second City family, she has performed and taught for all Chicago, Los Angeles, and Toronto locations.

Tamale also co-produces the internationally touring gender performance group, the Windy City Blenders. She performs with Tamale and Safety Third, a troupe comprised of performers from several cities. Tamale produces Bikes and Mics, a queer motorcycle group where everyone has a voice and the variety show-about-to-turn-podcast Brass Chuckles Comedy: Comedy that kicks ass!
