Burnishing Workshop

Saturday, Feb. 25, 9:00 am – noon.
Burnishing pottery is a technique in which clay is polished to a beautiful sheen without the use of glaze.
Burnishing pottery is a treatment in which the surface of the pot is polished, using a hard smooth surface such as a wooden or bone spatula, smooth stones, plastic, or even glass bulbs, while it still is in a leathery ‘green’ state, i.e., before firing.

You will work on various methods of burnishing, utilizing different tools and explore terra sigillata.  Terra sigillata is an ultra-refined slip that can give a soft sheen when polished or burnished while damp, to provide a high gloss. The ancient Greeks and Romans used this technique in lieu of glaze. You will be provided with two pieces of pottery, tools, terra sigillata and colorants to complete your projects. All pots will be fired.
