Banjo Jam Workshop with Randy Wilson

Sunday, January 19, 2020, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Location: Firehouse Cultural Center

Event type: Workshops & Classes

Randy Wilson is folk director emeritus at the Hindman Settlement School in eastern Kentucky. He has studied from many old-time banjo players in the region- Lee Boy Sexton, George Gibson, Roscoe Halcomb.
These represent many different styles of banjo playing from knock down or clawhammer, to brush style, to two finger styles of playing. Of particular interest is thumping on the banjo to create a back beat while droning on the fifth and fourth string. He will also share some tunes from eastern Kentucky.
Mr. Wilson will have banjos from Africa and through the different period banjos on the American continent. Banjo history, banjo stories, banjo tunings, banjo playing styles of the eastern Kentucky mountains. Come join us in the journey and bring your Banjo too!
