Tiempo Libre
This Cuban-born but Miami-based ensemble creates a joyous mix of traditional Cuban timba with classical training and an ear for new sounds emerging in the United States. Their “addictive, rhythmic concoction” (Creative Loafing Charlotte) of horns, percussion, guitars and warm, chocolatey vocals emerges from a deep enthusiasm for music’s ability to free the spirit.

Raised during Castro’s Cuba, the members of Tiempo Libre clandestinely channeled Miami radio stations after hours, and, in the nights of their youth, absorbed the forbidden sounds of Earth, Wind, and Fire, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, and Gloria Estefan. This exposure inspired their dreams to play music in America, and they are fast becoming a sensation from Miami to Minneapolis.

Electrifying and supremely talented, Tiempo Libre brings a hip-shaking, foot-tapping, hand-clapping hybrid of the heat of Havana and Miami and the cool tones of American funk, jazz, and R&B. Reservations are recommended to secure a seat!

In partnership with Straz Center, Firehouse Cultural Center presents a FREE Percussion Workshop/Interactive Performance led by the sensational members of Tiempo Libre!
