Location: Firehouse Cultural Center

Event type: Lectures

Vivien Morgan is a videojournalist for British TV News, as well as CNN and many European TV stations to whom she sold her reports. This followed a career primarily with BBC TV News as Producer/Director, Reporter and Commissioner of Programs on BBC World News. Vivien Morgan has published her own novel about the history behind broadcast media. A Senior University Lecturer in Broadcast Journalism, she has published two books on the emergence of videojournalism as a news gathering discipline, uniquely looking at the social, technological, and political landscape that made it possible.

In How Videography Changed Journalism, Vivien Morgan will look at how broadcast journalism has changed the game of gathering and recording news stories for larger audiences and what it means to be a videojournalist. Some of the big topics that changed how broadcasting should be recorded include historic events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The discussion would be about the democratizing of broadcast journalism and how the revolution of mobile devices and cameras have allowed for people to upload their own viral videos and affect how news is being told from television to social media in the modern day.

The FCC Brenda Knowles ‘Inside Journalism’ Series

This series includes panel discussions focused on all forms of journalism, from print, broadcast, and photo-journalism to on-line media, followed by audience Q & A. The Brenda Knowles ‘Inside Journalism’ Series has been established to honor the impact Knowles made as the Publisher and Editor of South Hillsborough County’s award-winning community newspaper, The Observer. Brenda worked for The Observer from 1988 until her death in January, 2014. She enjoyed her work immensely and had a never-ending passion for creating a newspaper that was relevant to the community and a “relentless focus on sharing good news.” On her editorial side, Brenda was dedicated to the proper use of the English language.
