Leland Faulkner is a trained actor, director, choreographer, licensed pyrotechnician, film-maker, and creator of effects for theater and television. His performances began with mime and are constantly evolving. The current work has expanded into new vaudeville and performance art.

He has toured a wide variety of popular programs for more than twenty years. From the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C, to The Ebaru Cultural Center in Shinigawa, Japan, Faulkner has captivated audiences around the world. His exploration of the visual and human has led him into magic and myth, as he has sought new and intriguing ways of expressing idea and story.

RESIDENCY SCHEDULE

The Residency Program kicks off with Leland Faulkner’s Gala Performance on Saturday February 25th followed by a week of workshops including: Storytelling & Story Theater, Light Theater & Shadow Play and Theater, Mime, Mask & Improvisation. An Inside the Artist’s Studio experience with Faulkner takes place on Wednesday the 29th at 7:00pm. The week wraps up as participants have the opportunity to apply their workshop experiences in performing together with Leland Faulkner in the Residency Finale Performance on Friday, March 2nd.

RESIDENCY WORKSHOPS with Leland Faulkner

Workshop 1- STORYTELLING & STORY THEATRE

Leland will guide tellers in the storytelling process. Learn simple tales from literature and discover how to make them come alive. Explore just how vital tales can be in bringing literature and imagination to life.

As part of this storytelling & story theatre workshop, we will learn to feel more comfortable in front of a group and increase our physical and mental awareness in the process. (Wear comfortable clothes you can move in.)

STORYTELLING & STORY THEATRE

Workshop 2- LIGHT THEATRE/SHADOW PLAY

Explore the magic of light and shadow in the creation of shadow puppetry and theater. Leland will demonstrate and teach familiar as well as intricate hand and body shadows and will explain the origin, history, and culture of shadows and shadow puppetry. We will work on both the large and small screen, with a variety of light effects. Plan to experiment and be ready to start your own articulated shadow forms and puppet.

LIGHT THEATER/SHADOW PLAY

Workshop 3 – THEATER, MIME, MASK & IMPROVISATION

Join Leland for a physical and interactive workshop in two parts that utilizes imagination and movement. Part of the process will be the creation and use of plaster masks.

In Part 1: Participants will make plaster face or head masks with which to develop characters. (Dress for mess). $5.00 Materials Fee.

In Part 2: Leland will teach the essentials of mastering the most famous mime illusions, (wall, leans, walks, climbing stairs, climbing a ladder, etc.) Participants will also be led through a series of fun and exciting improvisation games. Work with a group to create stage pictures, increase physical and mental awareness, learn to share the stage and feel more comfortable in front of a group. (Wear comfortable pants/shirt that allow for easy movement.)

Workshop Reservations may be made at the Ruskin Branch Library, 26 Dickman Dr. S.E. (and US-41) Ruskin, FL 33570-4313 or online below, beginning Friday, February 10th.

Residency Workshops are free, but space is limited and reservations are required. The Residency experience begins with Leland’s Gala Performance. Workshop attendees are strongly encouraged to attend the opening performance. This will provide a context and great jump-start for the workshop and performance experiences the following week.
